Curriculum Intent - What are we trying to achieve?
At Cherry Tree, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through: listening and appraising;
singing; performing as a solo or ensemble; and composing across a wide variety of historical periods,
styles, traditions, and musical genres. We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as
well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an
unbiased respect for the role that music may play in any person’s life.
We believe all children should have the opportunity to become musicians and we aim to teach all children an instrument.
Pupils in EYFS and KS1 will learn to play untuned and tuned percussion instruments. Children in Year 4 are all taught to play a brass instrument and children in Year 6 are given the opportunity to learn to play the ukulele.
Additionally, children have the opportunity to learn an instrument and play as part of a band through the Rocksteady program.
There is also a choir open to children in KS2, with pupils being given the opportunity to perform at the Young Voices event.

ENO Project
In September 2025, Year 5 received a letter from Omar Shahyar and The English National Opera company, asking us to help complete Omar’s composition: Blue, Red, Yellow. Each week of the autumn term, we improvised rhythms and tunes to compose a short piece of music to describe a colour. 5B chose caramel brown and 5A chose kiwi green. We had great fun creating our compositions. To begin with, we had to create a word cloud to inspire us. The words described caramel and kiwi.
In February, we were invited to The Victoria Hall in Bolton to share our work and to listen to the compositions of other children from across the North West. There were singers from The English National opera who sang for us; they had beautiful operatic voices. And even more excitingly, we got to meet Omar, an actual composer!
