Year 5

< Back

Hello and welcome to Year 5 website page.

We are looking forward to the academic year ahead and can’t wait to find out what awaits us!  Please find below some information which may be useful for you and your child.

There are two teachers in Year 5 Mr Shaw and Mrs Chesney; supporting us are Ms Travers (HLTA), Miss Donnelan and Miss Spragg. We will all be working closely together to ensure an interesting and exciting year.

Our topic this half term is Anglo-Saxons and we will be studying the Vikings next half term. After Christmas, our topic will be Dragonology and to end the year the topic focus will be Space.

Our class author is currently Tony Bradman and the class read is ‘Anglo-Saxon Boy’. After the holidays we will be reading ‘Beowulf’ by Michael Morpurgo. After Christmas, our class author will be Cressida Cowell as we read ‘How to train your dragon.’ To end the year our class author will be Anthony Horowitz as we read ‘Groosham Grange’ as a class read.

P.E. will take place on Wednesday afternoon (indoor) with Rachel. Please make sure your child has warm clothing as we head towards winter. Please make sure your children have the appropriate kit and that no jewellery is worn. Earrings should be taken out before your child comes to school or send in plasters to cover their ears.

Children will be expected to read at least 3 times a week with adults commenting in journals with an age-appropriate question related to the focus of that reading time.

Spellings will be given once a week, time is given in class to practice these but its encouraged for the children to study these at home too.

English/Topic and Maths homework will be set routinely including tasks set on apps such as mathletics.

We hope this information is useful and look forward to the year ahead.
